NFL notebook: Browns LB Kirksey lands $38 million extension

The Cleveland Browns rewarded linebacker Christian Kirksey with a four-year, $38 million contract extension on Tuesday.

Kirksey led the Browns with 148 tackles last season, third-most in the NFL. He was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2017 season.

The 24-year-old Kirksey emerged as one of the team's building blocks with his stellar season, his third in the NFL.

"(Browns coach) Hue Jackson has been telling me from Day One that I have a chance to be a great player in this league and for them to offer me this contract speaks volumes," Kirksey said in the team's press release. "I am glad to be here and to be a Brown for a long time. This is my home. This is where I want to be. I love my teammates and we are ready to get this thing rolling. I am excited for the future."

--Chicago Bears backup quarterback Mark Sanchez injured his left knee during an organized team activity workout and will be sidelined until the start of training camp.

The nature of Sanchez's injury wasn't detailed in initial reports. Training camp begins on July 27.

The Bears waived quarterback Connor Shaw earlier Tuesday but rescinded the move later in the day after Sanchez was injured.

--Dallas Cowboys cornerback Nolan Carroll was arrested early Monday in Dallas on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

Carroll was pulled over at approximately 2:15 a.m. for an unspecified traffic violation, and he was arrested at that time. He posted bond Monday afternoon after he was booked into Dallas County Jail at about 7:50 a.m.

Sidebar, an Uptown Dallas club near where Carroll was arrested, was having what was promoted as a "Welcome to Dallas Celebration" for him Sunday night. Police did not say where Carroll had been before he was stopped.

The Cowboys signed Carroll to a three-year, $10 million free agent deal in March. He was working with the Cowboys' first-team defense during organized team activities. Carroll is entering his eighth NFL season. He started all 16 games for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, recording one interception and 41 tackles.

--Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin said he is unsure if Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is holding star quarterback Russell Wilson accountable enough in response to an ESPN story citing friction inside the locker room.

On an interview with 710 ESPN's "Brock and Salk," Baldwin admitted he did not read the entire article but praised Carroll for the job he has done managing personalities.

"I don't know (about Wilson's accountability)," Baldwin told 710 ESPN. "Honestly, I didn't even read the entire article. I read parts of it. Didn't really have time to read the whole thing."

The ESPN article suggested that Seahawks star cornerback Richard Sherman has engaged in an ongoing feud with Carroll and Wilson dating back to the team's loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.

--Tony Romo's familiar locker and his No. 9 jersey are unclaimed at the Dallas Cowboys' training facility in Frisco, Texas. And there is no definitive meaning.

Romo is not officially retired from the NFL, a process that requires submitting paperwork through the league office. But owner Jerry Jones said last month he felt the process would be finalized after June 1.

In several interviews since Romo announced he would join CBS Sports in a broadcasting role, Romo was hesitant to describe the move as retirement.

Dallas terminated Romo's contract, which created a savings against the salary cap, but even filing retirement paperwork doesn't mean his career is over.

--The Detroit Lions signed running back Matt Asiata and offensive lineman Connor Bozick and waived fullback Michael Burton and injured linebacker Brandon Chubb, the team announced.

Asiata, 29, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings from 2012-16. He rushed for 402 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games (six starts) with Minnesota last season.

Bozick, a 22-year-old guard, is a rookie out of Delaware. He played in 46 games over four seasons with the Blue Hens, earning two All-Colonial Athletic Association selections at both tackle and guard.
