Roster Management

Master your team's lineup with rules for starters, bench players, injured reserve slots, and player health statuses.

How It Works

Effective roster management is the cornerstone of any successful fantasy season. Your roster is composed of players you've drafted, acquired through trades, or picked up as free agents. Each week, you must set a starting lineup from your active roster. These are the players whose on-field performance will contribute to your team's score for that week's matchup. The remaining players on your active roster are placed on your bench. Bench players do not accumulate points for your team, but they provide crucial depth and flexibility.

Managing player statuses is a critical weekly task. Players can be designated as Injured (IR), Out (O), Doubtful (D), or Questionable (Q) based on real-life team reports. Leagues often provide special Injured Reserve (IR) slots that allow you to move an injured player off your active roster, freeing up a spot to sign a healthy replacement without having to drop the injured player. This strategic tool helps you navigate the inevitable injuries that occur during a long season.

Your goal is to optimize your starting lineup each week to maximize your scoring potential. This involves analyzing matchups, monitoring player health, and staying ahead of bye weeks. Players on a bye week will not play and therefore cannot score points. Forgetting to bench a player on a bye is a common and costly mistake. Diligent roster management means making tough decisions about who to start, who to sit, and when to make moves on the waiver wire or through trades to improve your squad.

Key Concepts

Active Roster

Players eligible to be in the starting lineup.

This includes both starters and bench players.

Starting Lineup

Players whose stats count for the week.

Must adhere to positional requirements (e.g., 1 QB, 2 RB).

Bench

Active players not in the starting lineup.

Their points do not count, but they can be swapped in.

Injured Reserve (IR)

A designated spot for injured players.

Frees up a roster spot without forcing you to drop the player.

Player Status

Indicates a player's health.

Examples: Questionable (Q), Doubtful (D), Out (O).

Bye Week

A week where a player's team does not play.

Players on a bye will score zero points and must be benched.

Strategy Tips

  • 1Prioritize Handcuffs. For your top running backs, try to roster their direct backup. If your star player gets injured, you have an immediate, high-upside replacement ready to go.
  • 2Play the Matchups. Don't be afraid to bench a star player with a tough matchup in favor of a lesser player with a very favorable one. This is especially true for defenses and kickers.
  • 3Manage Bye Weeks Proactively. Look ahead a few weeks to see how bye weeks will impact your roster. Avoid having too many key players on a bye in the same week by planning your waiver claims and trades accordingly.

Commissioner Settings

Commissioners have granular control over roster configurations to suit their league's preferences:

SettingDescription
Roster SizeSet the total number of players a team can have on its active roster. Default: 16.
Positional LimitsDefine the maximum number of players allowed at each position (e.g., max 4 RBs). Default: No limit.
Injured Reserve (IR) SlotsSet the number of dedicated slots for injured players. Default: 1.
Lineup Lock TimeDetermines when lineups lock for the week—either at the first game's kickoff or individually for each game. Default: Individual game lock.
Undroppable Players ListEnable a list of elite players that cannot be dropped to waivers, preventing league imbalance. Default: Enabled.
Waiver Period After DropThe time a dropped player must remain on waivers before becoming a free agent. Default: 2 days.
